Response from Bradford University, Northern England

TAUGHT COURSES
Antenna/EM material (mainly RF) in all years of the U/G programme. In
final year, the optional module 'Transmission Systems' is 50% antennas.
'Transmission Systems' is common with MSc courses in RF and Microwave
Eng., RF Comms Eng., and Comms + Real-time Electronics. These all also do
an additional half-module in antenna design.

RESEARCH
FDTD for field distribution in human head (derived from MRI data)
Parallel computers for FDTD and MoM
Compact ranges for EMC: now testing pulsed excitation
Superconducting electrically-small antennas
Exact modelling of current distribution on helical and printed spiral
antennas
Antennas for mobile handsets with reduced irradiation of the head
Incremental diffraction methods
Propagation studies for satellite-mobile
Zone-plate antennas as a n alternative to dishes
Antennas for wireless LANs
Effect of water droplets and ice particles on satellite propagation
....plus others

FACILITIES
Two anechoic chambers for ~1GHz upwards, one with el/az polar positioner,
other with planar probe positioner that can scan a 1.2m cube.
Data logging is all under computer control.
Robot for arbitrary field probing.
Phantom human heads: cube, sphere and realistic.
Narda implantable field probe
Dedicated computer: Sun Sparc 20 with 128MB RAM, 3GB HDD and 600MB
optical drive, plus 9 PCs, up to P90
Access to Cray Y-MP and several MPPs
Software: THREDE/EMA3D, MAFIA, SONNET, MICROSTRIPES, NEC2, MININEC, AWAS,
GEMACS, etc.
Range of commercial and generic mobile phone handsets
Network analysers: HP 8720, 8510, 8753, 8410
Outstation for satellite propagation studies in low-noise environment,
with 2x 3m dishes.
enlarged cryostat for RF superconductivity studies.
