Several well-known NEC developers and users use Macs. You're in good
company.

If you have a Fortran compiler for your Mac, you can compile the source
code available at ftp.netcom.com/pub/ra/rander/NEC.

Or, if you have US$250 to spare, consider ordering the NEC2/Mac
package from LLNL. (The UNIX and VAX/VMS versions cost US$850.) I've
attached a note that Jerry sent to me last August that explains the
arrangement. Since the information is likely to be of general
interest, I'll cc this reply to the rest of the list.

| Dave,

| We release the NEC-4 code to qualified organizations or
| individuals as "code in development" because that is a category that
| lets us handle it directly rather than having all requests go through
| the Department of Energy's National Energy Software Center. This is the
| same way that NEC-2 has been handled.
|
| While NEC-2 has become essentially in the public domain, NEC-4 is under
| copyright by the University of California, and the University is serious
| about enforcing that. NEC-4 is also subject to export restrictions, so
| requests from outside the U.S. must be placed through the embassy of the
| country where the request originates. Information and an order form for
| NEC-2 or 4 follow. I guess that could be put on nec-list, but the $850
| charge will probably stop many casual users.

| ****************************** NEC Information ************************
|
| Thank you for your inquiry about the Numerical Electromagnetics Code (NEC) -
| Method of Moments developed at LLNL under funding by the Department of
| Defense (DoD). The purpose of this letter is to explain more about NEC
| and how you may obtain a copy of the NEC Software and Documentation. NEC's
| accuracy and availability have caused it to become a standard in antenna
| analysis. As such, it is vitally important that user feedback be incor-
| porated into the latest versions. NEC remains in continuing development
| and is meant to be used as a research and analysis tool. NEC's exemption
| from Department of Energy Directive 1360.4, allows us, as software
| developers, to distribute NEC to DoE and DoD organizations and contractors,
| and to individuals and groups willing to work in collaboration with us
| during software development.
|
| The versions of NEC currently in use are NEC--2 and NEC--4. NEC--2 will
| model wire structures in free space or over a ground plane and can also
| model closed, perfectly conducting surfaces. NEC--4 includes the cap-
| abilities of NEC--2 and also can model wires that are buried or penetrate
| into the ground. NEC--4 also includes a revised modeling algorithm that
| is stable for electrically small models and has a more accurate treatment
| for wire junctions and stepped-radius wires as well as a number of other
| new features. NEC--4 is subject to export restrictions, and hence
| distribution is limited to U.S. citizens under conditions described below.
|
| Also included with the NEC distribution are the graphics programs NECPLOT
| which reads an input or output file and plots a view of the structure,
| ZPLOT which plots antenna input impedance versus frequency, and PATPLT
| which makes polar plots of radiation patterns. These programs use the
| DIGLIB graphics library which is included with the NEC distribution package
| for VAX/VMS, UNIX or Macintosh computers. A package similar to DIGLIB is
| sold by an independent software developer for DOS machines, and may be
| useable with the NEC plotting programs with some modifications. The program
| IGUANA, which runs on DOS PCs and supports interactive graphics generation
| of the model description for NEC, is available separately from the Applied
| Computational Electromagnetics Society. IGUANA can be valuable for
| developing complex model descriptions such as those for ships and also
| provides graphical displays of the output. However, any model can be
| entered by typing commands into a file, following the instructions in the
| NEC User's manual, and this approach may be easier than learning IGUANA
| except for complicated three dimensional models. If IGUANA is not used,
| the NECPLOT program should be considered essential for checking the
| accuracy of the model input.
|
|
| The distribution package for NEC includes:
|
| * Fortran source files for the single- and double-precision
| versions of NEC--2 or 4
|
| * Fortran source files for NECPLOT, ZPLOT and PATPLT
|
| * Compiled executable files of the above programs are included
| for VAX/VMS or Macintosh distributions only
|
| * Sample input and output files for examples shown in the manual
|
| * DIGLIB - Device Independent Graphics LIBrary for VAX/VMS,
| UNIX or Macintosh systems
|
| * NEC documentation (printed):
| * NEC--2 Documentation - UCID--18834: Part I, Program Description
| -- Theory; Part II, Program Description -- Code and Part III, User's
| Guide
| or
| * NEC--4 Documentation - UCRL-MA-109338: Part I, User's Manual and
| Part II, Program Description -- Theory
|
| * Documentation for NECPLOT, ZPLOT and PATPLT
|
| * DIGLIB manual (electronic file)
|
|
| At LLNL we have versions of NEC--2 and 4 for DEC-VAX/VMS, UNIX (Sun or IBM
| RC/6000) and Apple Macintosh systems. The UNIX package is normally sent
| out as a compressed tar archive on an 3.5 inch diskette. The VAX/VMS
| distribution is a VMS BACKUP save-set normally written on 9-track tape.
| The Macintosh code is written on 3.5 inch diskettes as a self-extracting
| archive. We will try to accommodate requests for other formats when
| possible. The Macintosh version of NEC--2 on floppy disks is available
| alone for $250, or if requested will be included with the package for
| larger computers.
|
| We do not have access to a DOS computer, but can send the UNIX source files
| on 3.5 inch diskettes in DOS format. The NEC--4 source files should compile
| with minor changes (such as the CPU time function) with DOS Fortran
| compilers. NEC--2 is older code, and may present more problems in
| conversion to DOS. A version of NEC--2 for DOS (NEC--81) is included
| in the NEEDS-2.0 package available from the Applied Computational
| Electromagnetics Society.
|
| If you are interested in joining the group of NEC Users/Collaborators,
| the NEC Code Distribution Policy must be followed to initiate a request
| for NEC software from LLNL.
|
| The requester must:
|
| * Agree to collaborate with us.
|
| * Confirm compliance to our policy with your signature
| on the completed NEC Order Form/ Questionnaire.
|
| * Place a formal order for NEC on a completed Order Form/Questionnaire
| submitted with payment-in-full, in the form of a check made out to
| "The Regents of the University of California", or a purchase order
| for the $850 fee charged for distribution and processing.
|
| * Agree to use NEC as a research and analysis
| tool only, NEC may not be sold or re-distributed in any way.
|
| * provide us with information about your planned
| application for NEC.
|
| * Inform LLNL in writing of errors or deficiencies
| encountered in the use of NEC.
|
| * Share any modifications or additions made to NEC.
|
|
| Since NEC--4 is subject to export restrictions additional requirements apply.
| Persons requesting NEC--4 must acknowledge that NEC--4 is subject to export
| restrictions under the Arms Export Control Act (22 USC 2751 et seq), cannot
| be distributed outside of their organization and must not be taken out of
| the United States. Requestors of NEC--4 must be U.S. citizens and must
| ensure that only U.S. citizens will have access to the code. In some cases
| NEC--4 can be sent to requestors who meet the requirements of a "U.S.
| Person" as defined in the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.
|
| The NEC Development Team is not responsible for user instruction on NEC codes
| or software installation. We guarantee the results of the sample problems
| only. If these arrangements are to your satisfaction, we will be happy to
| send the latest appropriate version of NEC to you.
|
| To order NEC--2, or NEC--4 for a U.S. citizen, the questionnaire can be
| returned to:
|
| G. J. Burke, L-156
| Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
| P.O. Box 5504
| Livermore, CA 94550
| (FAX: 510-422-3013)
|
| Persons outside of the United States who wish obtain NEC--4 submit their
| request through embassy channels and HQDA (DAMI-CIT) to:
|
| Commander, USA ISEC
| ASQB-OSE-TP (Sandy Daniel)
| Ft. Huachuca, AZ 85613-5300
|
| Thank you for your interest in NEC. We are looking forward to developing
| a mutually rewarding user/developer relationship with you.
