Forrest,

I have about five cross-reference lists that all list the VT-30 as
being crossed to the 01-A. They list the type VT-27 as crossing with
the commercial type 30.

Several other people have pointed out that the British used a similar
designation for "Valve, Transmitting" and the tubes Duncan has are
most likely these. Many of these tubes had wire leads and no bases as
Duncan described. Ediswan was a British tube manufacturer according
to one reply I received.

A number of cross references may be found in the Boatanchor Archives
at ftp://ftp.theporch.com/pub/boatanchors including some for UK tubes
and the 5-digit numbers starting with 38 that were used by the Navy in
W.W.II.
