There are a few pages (P80ff) in Marcuvitz 'Waveguide Handbook' which
refers back back to Chu's paper of 1938. There has not been much else
since.
I would not say that characteristics are similar to those of a
rectangular guide but it does depend on the aspect ratio. Be aware
that when you build elliptical waveguide, any distortions or poor
tolerancing do very nasty things in the way of higher order modes.
