Your memory estimate is very close of course and I agree that a (NEC4)
code error is unlikely. We regularly (almost daily) run problems of
this size and up to 7800 segments although I never attempt to run out
of core. Nittany Scientific has done major rewrites of the code to
put it into GNEC. On of our engineers recently tried to run a large
problem out of core not realizing the pitfalls. He recieved similar
errors. I am not sure that the recent version of GNEC will "properly"
run out of core (I am not sure this is every proper operation). I
will be working with Nittany Scientific on this but as you know, it is
not a good practice.
