The HEMAC recently mentioned is shaped like an air wound toroid, which
is wrapped around the tree trunk. The idea is to create a transformer,
with the trunk functioning as a single turn secondary. If I remember
correctly, there was an article about it in QST or maybe QEX several
years ago.

The aim of the technique was to provide a lower loss method of
coupling into the tree, than nails which suffer from contact
resistance. It also eliminates radiation from the wire connected to
the nail, but whether that would make the signal strength better or
worse in practice is open to speculation.
