Chuck,

Sometime in the last few years, Randall Rhea published an article in
"Applied Microwave and Wireless" on modeling an inductor on a pc board as a
high-impedance transmission line. He had pretty good agreement at
predicting and measuring several resonances. Also, he has a lot of material
in his filters book on inductors, and may have Medhurst's work there. I've
been told recently that back issues of AMW are archived at
www.amwireless.com.
In my case, I didn't model a straight-axis solenoid, I was modeling the
CTHA. I built a few air-core models from 2 turns with 0.25" diameter wire
at 35 MHz first resonance, to 8 turns of #14 up in the 300-450 MHz range.
Since the CTHA is a double helix turned around on itself, I feel that
modeling a simpler coil form such as a solenoid should work fine. Remember
that when you model the inductor, what you do with the ends will make a
difference. Jerry Burke's short antenna termination result is different
than what one would get by using a return wire, for example.
