gfortran on Mac OS X works well for me when building NEC (2 and 4). It
didn't handle "modern" fortran constructs in another project, nor did
IBM or Absoft (on Mac OS X). NAG fortran and Intel fortran worked fine
and were fast and solid, but somewhat expensive. Today I'd go with
Intel if price were not a factor.
